It started with clay. The feeling of playing in the mud when your little, and now as a grown adult still being in love with that feeling. Learning how to make the mud into something more. The magical transformation that happens to that little lump of mud just by the force of your hands and a little water. The magic that happens within a kiln, the chemical transformation that turns dull paints into vivid multi color hardened glass. It all fascinates me.

Then I discovered glass. I was hooked for the similar reasons I fell in love with ceramics. The fluidity, how quickly it changes, how it can be both a solid and a liquid at once. Of course it doesn’t have the textural qualities you get to enjoy first hand with ceramics, (ouch! hot!). But there is a rhythm and flow to working with glass that is like the synchronicity I find when working on the potters wheel.

My formal education started in ceramics at Otterbein University. During my time at Otterbein I also started taking several semesters of glassblowing at The Ohio State University. I realized they each have their unique uses and I enjoy being able to explore the functions of both. Some ideas are more possible to realize in glass, and others easier to bring to life with ceramics.
